On January 7, the House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act, H.R. 29. As soon as Monday (today), it will go to a vote in the Senate. If this bill passes, it would:
Require mandatory, indefinite detention of certain noncitizens, including any undocumented person or DACA recipient, arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting-related offenses, even if they are never charged with a crime.
Give state attorneys general, including notoriously anti-immigrant ones from states like Texas and Louisiana, the power to dictate immigration policy at the federal level and on the international stage.
Both of our CA Senators skipped voting on whether to let the bill advance; since Democrats did not unite to filibuster it, the bill is progressing to a final vote in the Senate.
Call your Senators and tell them to vote NO on the “Laken Riley” Act, and that you are disappointed that they didn’t show the courage to vote against it when it first came up.

MORE ABOUT LOBBYING
With the 2024 election over, the next phase of fighting against Project 2025 and protecting people is state and local lobbying.
Making phone calls are also extremely valuable to get our voices heard immediately.
For a sustainable impact, we recommend handwriting your letter and hand-delivering it to the Office of the Elected Officials and speaking to them or a staffer about your concerns.
